Curly Purly Soaker on 12ply Spacefrog unknown colourway, my favourite soaker!
Ladybug Loops Shorties in Wooltopia 12ply BFL "Girls just wanna have fun"
Ladybug Loops Busybee soaker in LL Sage Grapes colourway. Double knitted in 8ply- very fast knit!
I've been so busy I haven't actually had time to blog... so here are a few finished objects from recent months lol.
we had an urgent need for soakers and shorties for her night nappies for summer so they came first, now I get to knit some less useful pretty things again. On the needles at the moment is a Tropical Lily in Anchor Magicline cotton which I hope to finish this year- ie in the next 5.5hrs. So perhaps I'll blog again tomorrow :P
I have also been sewing a lot of things and even made some beaded bookmarks so thought I might start another blog for crafty stuff and leave this one for knits and dyeing. I have a lot of dyes now, just need the time. Hoping to do some tie dye tshirts and singlets with the kids as well over the holidays.
Well better get the dinner on so I can get knitting :) Happy New Year!!!

Still here still knitting!
Wow what a busy month, I've started a new post a few times and even saved one somewhere but just didn't get time to edit and post it properly!
I have just finished my first shawl, wow what fun they are to knit, I had no idea they were so easy really :) a bit tricky to start off, but once you get an idea of what you are doing, it all flows really smoothly. I had to frog a LOT at the start though before I "got" the idea :P Next shawl should be easier! I am tempted to make one for my best friend for christmas :) I just wish I could knit quicker!
This is my Shetland Triangle shawl, knitted in BWM Luxury 8ply, Ruby- definitely one of my fav yarns! I really should take an action pic!
I've also just completed a Swap- all items apart from BWM wool had to be sourced from an opshop. I found such goodies and the possibilities were endless but in the end I settled on a gorgeous cabled jumper, dismantled and frogged the cuffs on the sleeves, sewed them together and lined it with some fabric I found at the op shop too! Added a lovely button I also found and made a strap. It was a bit of a stretch for my sewing abilities making something from scratch without a pattern and working it out as I went but I was quite pleased with the result! I also found some cool vintage patterns, and some beaded necklaces became stitchmarkers!
I received my swap parcel on the same day and was thrilled to receive a gorgeous shawl! And a lovely felted needle roll with vintage needles, what a blessing! I wish the weather was cooler at the moment as my shawls won't get as much use as I'd like. I'll just wear them at home anyway lol
well thats all for now, I'm about to start some new projects and have just bought some BWM cotton, some Harmony (cotton and wool blend) and some procion dyes to try! If I can get some soda ash today I might try dyeing it tonight :)

Landscape adventures and dogs..
Dogs and yarn don't mix- I've discovered this first hand! I'm surprised it hasn't happened sooner but then I don't usually lay it out at nose level. I guess I can be grateful we don't have a cat LOL.
I recently bought some gorgeous Landscape Dyes samples from Jolly Jumbuck, great way to try them out. In fact after trying out the first two dyeups I went the whole hog and mixed up all 12 apart from Wallaby- it just wasn't a brown day hehe. All laid out in styrofoam cups, originally I was going to dye a small sample of each, but decided I loved all the colours, and had to have them all! So Rainbow Splash was born...
After admiring my efforts I decided to take some pics outside on the table where the light was better. Took some nice piccies then opened up the skein to finish drying. Silly me leaving it on the table to dry. Of course it smells like a wet sheep doesn't it... very intriguing to our family pet Sam LOL.
Well I did manage to ball it up today and only a small part of the yarn was broken, and only in two places. Amazing really as it looked like a puppets woolly mop head laying on the ground, I never thought I'd untangle it.
Lesson learned here... hehe No more drying yarn in reach of DOGS!
I'm enjoying playing with the landscape acid dyes. Will definitely skein some more soon and do some more dyeing.
At the moment I'm working on my first shawl! A Shetland Triangle, which I may give to Mum for her 60th birthday if the effort is successful and looks ok! So back to my knitting now or i'll never finish ;)

Time for another project
Have been rather busy this week and not able to get online as much. Lots of knitting which is great.
I just finished this one and am very happy with it. I've finally conquered i-cord and duplicate stitch! Plus I adapted the lace pattern and managed to get it all to work. So all good.
The bodice, i-cord and the hearts on the skirt are from the small skeins I dyed with food colour and koolaid in the last post, the rest of the skirt is in pink BWM luxury 8ply.
So now what do I knit next? Its definitely time to dye with landscape dyes I got last week, but I've been trying to find some old pots at the opshops and none anywhere. Apparently they are in big demand! A lot to be said for dyeing with safe food colours lol

Dyeing with Kool-Aid!
Strange stuff this Kool Aid- you drink it apparently, I'd hate to see the colour of your insides afterwards though.
Lots of fun to dye with though, and it smells really good too, my microwave still smells like berries
Very simple to use, basically as per the normal food colouring dyeups, not much vinegar required (or any really) as there is enough citric acid in the fruit drink mixes already. I mixed up the sachets in a few tablespoons of water and applied as previous, then microwaved to set.
this is my first effort with Kool-aid, grape, berry blue, lemonade, strawberry and orange flavours
the next two skeins I just had fun playing with the leftover Koolaid and some new food colours from the bakery. I will actually use the last as a contrast for another Kaia Babydoll for my niece's 1st birthday. Pic of all 3 here, and balled below.

Definitely an addiction
I haven't got enough yarn, I need more to dye! Might try some overdyeing later as my supply is running out until an order of BWM Luxury arrives! But I do have a pink that wasn't quite the right shade, maybe I'll overdye it with blue or purple :)
first a FO (finished object) complete with action pic! Slack of me not to post this as I finished it in 24 hours and I'm very proud of myself. I didn't do much else though that day LOL.
I've also balled up the second skein and this is the result! Much darker than I was aiming for but I've learned I need to water down the dye a bit more :) I love it all the same but may end up as something for me instead of bub.

But wait there's more!
It's definitely a new addiction, I can't wait to try different types of dyes. A very lovely lady is sending me some Kool aid to try, I can't believe people drink the stuff hehe. And I'll definitely have to place an order for some landscape dye samples to try and make some matching trims for other yarns I have in my stash. I might need to order some more yarn to dye while I'm at it!
Last nights dye was a trim to match the first ball
Today was an interesting dyeing session, the yarn had been soaking for almost 24hrs in the vinegar solution by the time I got to it. When I put the dye in, it instantly sucked it up into the yarn in vibrant colours leaving all the water behind in the tray. I had to keep making up and adding more dye but I think it turned out really well. Not quite the lighter shades I was going for but I love it all the same. And its lovely BWM Luxury, so much nicer than the spotlight yarn I dyed first. I can't believe this is from simply using Queens food colouring.
I twisted the skein for the pic but its actually back hanging to dry now. I can't wait to see how it looks when its balled.

The finished yarn
Here it is in the skein before I wound it into a ball. I seriously need to get a ball winder, thats hard work.
All balled up and ready to knit! Ah but decisions, what to knit lol. Either a pair of longies or a babydoll dress I think :)
More yarn soaking and waiting to be dyed, best get cracking on that as its already 11pm! Although maybe I'll let the kids help me with some tomorrow ;)
How to dye Rainbow wool
Please bear in mind this is my first attempt! And its all out of the pantry cupboard with items I had handy.
I definitely need to write down what I did so I can follow it again! I followed several techniques posted on the net and information posted in my rav group :) Thank you lovely ladies if you ever read this.
1. skein wool- over the back of two kitchen chairs worked well for me, 100g this time, 2 x spotlight basics 100% wool.
2. soak skein in 50/50 vinegar and water solution, I used roughly a cup of each, inside a mixing bowl. Soak at least 30mins to overnight- I soaked for about 5hrs.
3. make up dyes. I had 6 salad dressing containers I'd never even opened, just perfect! I made up another solution of 150ml vinegar to 100ml water and used for the base. I split this over the 6 containers- roughly 40-50ml in each. The primary colours I used approx two eyedroppers full of Queens food colour, red, blue, green and yellow. The other shades were at least one dropper (about 1ml) of primary and up to 0.5ml
port wine/purple- was 2mls red and I just kept adding drops of blue until I achieved the desired colour. It didn't turn out how I wanted but I actually love the resulting colour now.
teal- I used one ml blue, and added drops of green until desired colour
orange- 1ml red, 2ml yellow- I think (have already forgotten!)
4. Test the dye colours, I used rolled up pieces of paper towel dipped in the tubs to start with but ended up using drops on tissues just as well.
5. squeeze the vinegar solution out of the skein gently and lay on a plastic lined tray. I also tried to some extra wrap under and between parts of the skein to stop colours mixing between the outside and inside etc.
6. Start pouring on dye! I started with red, then orange, then yellow, teal, green, blue, purple. then I think I did teal, yellow, orange again to join it back up to the red. Squish in as you go, starting a little away from the previous colour and letting it join in gently.
7. when all the colour is throughout the wool, blot off excess dye. I had run out of paper towel so used an old flat cloth nappy. It is now lovely pastel shades which will probably sadly wash out lol.
8. The hard part- transfer to a microwave safe container- I used a -pyrex baking dish- to cook in the microwave, this is where the yarn brushed up against itself as I tried to get it in, causing the colours to leak and bleed on each other. I put plastic wrap around and between the yarn as it touched, then I plastic wrapped loosely over the top to keep the moisture in
9. Cook in 2min bursts for 8-10mins, resting for a few mins in between each burst. I didn't touch the yarn at all during this time.
10. let it cool. After a while I took it out of the microwave knowing the pyrex would keep it warmer longer and I was impatient hehe. I took the plastic off and laid it on an old towel to cool down to room temp.
11. rinse in lukewarm water (or same temp as the wool) so as not to shock the wool, no dye came out at all. I added a little wool wash at this stage
12. Time to dry. I squeezed out the excess and gently pressed it with a towel to get most of the moisture out of it, being careful not to felt or rub. Then hang to dry!
I have saved some excess dye and the leftover vinegar solution from soaking the wool to reuse for my next effort. I'll be shopping for more food colours today ;)

I did it! I dyed my own rainbow wool!
Ok, I'm hooked. I knew I would be and I don't even know the end result yet.
My first attempt at dyeing wool may turn into a big running mess or it might turn out great. It looked gorgeous on the tray before I put it into the microwave- that will be where the trouble comes from if any as I know I bumped some of the colours together and didn't dry up the yarn enough and it did run together as I moved it all.
Still it was a lot of fun and I can't wait to get some proper dyes and different colours and experiment a little.

Crazy knitting nappy lady
that basically sums up who I am! 39yo happily married Mum to 1 son, 9yo, and 2 daughters, one 7yo one 11 months old.
Currently addicted to MCN (modern cloth nappies) and yarn for my latest knitting projects! I recently started knitting again after many years but am still a beginner really. Love to knit for my baby girl because she's small and it doesn't take long :P
